Processor is simply the core of the system and is often referred to as the Central Processing Unit or a CPU. This is one of the main components of a desktop, laptop, a mobile unit or any computing device. Clock Speed of a processor as the term suggests is another feature that influences the performance of a processor and that of the whole computer system. Clock speed generally starts from 1.83 GHz, and moves up like 1.86GHz, 2.00 Ghz, 2.53 Ghz, 2.6 GHz, 2.8 GHz, 3.0 Ghz etc.

Socket of a CPU has to be carefully selected based on the motherboard used in the desktop or laptop. The Socket of an Intel and AMD are differently classified for eg. Intel Socket types are referred as the LGA 775, LGA 725 etc where as that of AMD are referred as AM2, AM2+ and more.

Other things to look for when selecting a processor are the Cache,  bits – 32 or 64 , Memory Bus Speed etc.,
